Obituary

Dorothy Beadles Halligan passed away on April 2, 2023, at age 93 surrounded by her loved ones. Dorothy was born on December 24,1929 to the late Elizabeth Stowers Beadles and Robert Fletcher Beadles in Hilton Village, now part of Newport News, Virginia. After graduating from Newport News High School, she graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. While studying at UVA she met the love of her life, Bill Halligan, and they married in the UVA Chapel in 1950.

Dorothy and Bill began their married life in Virginia but in 1956, the young family moved to Spartanburg, SC. Dorothy worked several years as a RN in hospitals prior to becoming the college nurse and in charge of the Infirmary at Wofford College in Spartanburg. For thirty years, Dorothy compassionately cared for the students of Wofford while living on the campus in the Infirmary with Bill and their four children.

After their retirements in 1990, Dorothy and Bill moved to Pawleys Island, SC where they enjoyed almost nineteen wonderful years before moving to the Columbia Presbyterian Community in Lexington, SC. During retirement, Dorothy was an active member of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church volunteering with the Presbyterian Women and in many outreach programs of the church. Dorothy loved the beach where she and Bill took almost daily walks. They enjoyed travel both abroad and at home and particularly cherished time with their four children and their families.

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of almost 70 years, William Walter Halligan, Jr. She is survived by their four children and their spouses: William F. Halligan and his wife Pam of Columbia, SC; Katherine H. James and her husband Mike of Charlotte, NC; Timothy C. Halligan and his wife Ellerbe of Prosperity, SC; and, Susan H. Patterson and her husband Mark of Wirtz, VA. Dottie, as she was affectionately called, is also survived by her twelve beloved grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren: Elizabeth (and Ed) Black with sons, Hal, Will and Sam; Andy (and Katherine) Halligan with daughters, Frances, Molly and Kate; Will (and Samantha) Halligan with son Michael; Ben (and Brittany) Halligan with children Lillian, Charles and Mary Marshall; Nancy (and Randal) Ellison with children Annie and Jack; Abigail (and Chris) James with sons Jackson and Thomas; Dorothy (and Hamilton) King with son Walter; Sallie James; Brian (and Tory) Patterson; Mary Collins (and Wood) Britton with sons James and Thomas; Scott (and Stephanie) Patterson with son Cooper; and, Craig Patterson.
