Mrs. Dorothy Rivers Moody, 90, of Chapin died Saturday, September 20, 2014. Born July 28, 1924 in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Lewis Parker Rivers and Marie Hornsby Rivers.
A Columbia High School graduate, she married Howard "Mike" W. Moody, Jr. in 1942 and together they had five children. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
In 1972, they moved to Chapin. Mrs. Moody was a Charter member of the former North Columbia Woman's Club where she served as the First Vice President and Program Chairman. She was a member of Earlewood Garden Club and a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she served as President of City Council and was named Girl of the Year twice. In earlier years, Dorothy was very active in the PTA, serving as President of McCants PTA. She was also a den mother for Cub and Girl Scouts, and was awarded numerous Service to Mankind Awards from The Crippled Children Society. Dorothy and Mike danced for 12 years with the Happy Hoppers Western Square Dance Club. Nominated to Who's Who, she was a life member of Reformation Lutheran Church, and most recently attended St. Thomas Lutheran Church and Chapin United Methodist Church. Dorothy enjoyed collecting cook books, miniature pitchers, angels, and dolls. She was a great cook and loved making dishes for her friends.
Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Howard "Mike" W. Moody, Jr.; sons, Thomas Howard Moody, David Lewis Moody; daughters, Donna Kaye Tarallo, Dianne Moody Jones; grandchildren, Dawn Connelly, Kelli C. Shelton, Kimberly Moody, Thomas Moody, Heather Tarallo, Cody Tarallo, Austin Moody, Jessica Wyndham, and Kayla Moody; 11 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kathryn Rivers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Marie M. Connelly; grandchildren, Melanie Connelly, and Robert Thomas Moody; brothers, L.P. Rivers, Jr., Johnny C. Rivers, and Jimmy Rivers; and son in law, Rick Connelly.
A graveside service will be held 3 o'clock, Tuesday, September 23rd, at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Rd., Columbia, with The Rev. Albert L. Cox officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Monday, September 22nd, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia, SC.
