Columbia - Dorothy Elizabeth Shealy Horlacher, beloved wife and mother, and widow of Myron Edwin Horlacher, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2013 at the age of 90. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church, Columbia, SC. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Following the service, burial will be in the Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Columbia, SC is assisting the family.

Born March 12, 1922 in Little Mountain, SC, Dorothy, fondly known as Dot to her friends, was the oldest child and only daughter of the late Virgil Jacob Shealy and Anna Roberta Koon Shealy. She has one younger brother, Robert. Dot grew up in Little Mountain on a small family farm and learned at an early age how to be self-sufficient. After high school she left Little Mountain to attend Winthrop College and graduated with a B.A. in English in 1943. She taught English in several public schools in the South Carolina upstate and in 1949 met and fell in love with a handsome young WWII veteran, Myron. They married in June 1950 and together relocated to several states during Myron's tenure with Pillsbury before returning to South Carolina in the mid-sixties. Dot returned to teaching and worked part time as a substitute teacher at St. Andrews Elementary for several years. She helped Myron start Columbia Business Forms and was always proud of everything they accomplished. They loved taking trips to the South Carolina beaches and to Gatlinburg, Tennessee and this past June celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Dot cherished her many close friendships with her neighbors and was also a faithful and active member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church for many decades. She especially enjoyed her Thursday Morning Circle and the many friendships she developed through that ministry of caring and giving.

Dot is survived by her two daughters and sons- in-law, Linda Carpenter (Don), Janet Pulaski (Mike); four grandchildren, Heather Pulaski Cannon (Ronnie), Michael Bradley Pulaski (Ashley), Caleb Paul Pozsik and Joshua Edwin Pozsik; and three great grandchildren, Jonathan, Rachel and Matthew Cannon. She is also survived by her younger brother, Robert Hayne Shealy, and her many beloved nieces and nephews. Dot was predeceased by her loving husband, Myron Edwin Horlacher.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to everyone at Wildewood Downs who compassionately cared for Dot and to all of her faithful caregivers with Palmetto Health Hospice. Memorials in Dorothy's honor may be made to the Saint Andrew's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210. Memories and condolences may be added to the online guestbook at ShivesFuneralHome.com.
