Douglas Samuel Ford, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of deep faith, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.
Douglas was born on February 8, 1937, in Columbia, South Carolina, to Sarah Francis Ford and Douglas Samuel “Sam” Ford. He was their only child and was raised in Columbia, where he spent his life building a legacy of love, service, and faith.
As a young man, Douglas had a passion for sports and loved playing basketball and football, a reflection of his energy, strength, and competitive spirit that stayed with him throughout his life.
He was the beloved husband of Peggy Motley Ford, with whom he shared 40 wonderful years of marriage. Their life together was a testament to love, partnership, and enduring commitment.
Douglas was a proud and loving father to Steven Ford (Alonso Cuellar), Rene’ Ford, and Trina Winde (Robb Winde), and a devoted stepfather to Micah Durham (Michael Durham). He was a treasured grandfather to Candace Griggs, Cameron Griggs, Laken Hanna (Joshua Hanna), Luke Winde, Ryan Winde, Jake Winde, and Glennis Derrick (Dalton Mashburn). His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Israel Hanna, Jonah Hanna, Levi Hanna, Elijah James Hanna, Ethan Mashburn, Gage Mashburn, and Haizlee Mashburn, all of whom brought him great joy.
Douglas faithfully served his country as a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard for 27 years. He was a dedicated deacon at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, where his strong Christian faith guided his life and service to others. He was also a proud member of the Masonic fraternity.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life—golfing, fishing, gardening, and trips to the beach. Known for his great sense of humor, generous heart, patriotic spirit, and steadfast faith, Douglas made a lasting impact on all who knew him.
His life was a reflection of strength, kindness, and devotion. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of his family and friends.
The funeral service for Mr. Ford will be held at 10:30 o’clock, Saturday, March 21st, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will follow the service in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 9:30.
