Durwood Barton, age 72, died on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at his residence.

Durwood was born in Lancaster, SC to the late Horace Joseph Barton and Carrie Parsons. He was a 1965 graduate of USC, a member and National alumni president of Phi Kappa Alpha. During his law enforcement career, he was an FBI National Academy graduate, a 1979 graduate of US Secret Service and retired as a Captain of Richland Co. Sheriffs Dept. Durwood was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church, and a member of the Masonic Shandon Lodge #371. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Diane McCulloch Barton.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Gamble Payne of the home; sons, Durwood "Bo" Barton Jr. (Jan) of Gilbert, SC, and Henry Todd Sawyer (Kelly) of Irmo, SC; daughter, Ashley Sawyer Stallings(Jay) of North Augusta, SC; grandchildren, Shane, Lance, Trey, Will, and Eleese; brother, Charles Richard Barton(Pat) of Greenville, SC.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 3:00 PM Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet. Burial will be Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Greenlawn Memorial Park Columbia, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Belin Memorial United Methodist Church building fund at 4182 Hwy 17 Bus., Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 or to Backpack Buddies of Horry/Georgetown Co., 12053 Hwy 17 South Bypass – Garden City, SC 29576. Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel is assisting the family in Murrells Inlet with Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel assisting in Columbia.
