Edgar Wayne Cagle, 76, of Columbia passed away on March 29, 2013. Born in Winnsboro, SC on March 13, 1937, he was the son of the late Roy and Cassie Geddings Cagle.
He retired as a Master Sergeant from the US Army in 1976, successful in a 25-year career with Military Intelligence. He was a Vietnam veteran having completed two tours and was awarded the Bronze Star. During his military career he completed a B.S. degree in Business with Chaminade College in Hawaii. His military career was followed with a career in SC Department of Highways as a Right-of-Way agent for 25 years.
Wayne was an active member of the Ft. Jackson Masonic Lodge #374. He held the post of Master Mason there for 52 years, Lodge Secretary for 15 years and as Worshipful Master for 1 year.
Wayne and Betty were active members with Ebenezer Lutheran Church. They were active in the Square Dealers Camping Club, traveling, as well as serving as President and Secretary, for 12 years. Completing his careers with the military and highway department, they both continued to help others by volunteering as Tri-City Hospice Care providers in Columbia for 5 years.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty; his children Denise Cagle of Columbia, SC and Alton Cagle of Omaha, Nebraska. He is also going to be sorely missed by his and Betty's companion dog, Poppit. His extended family includes his sisters, Vera Livingston and Judy Ward, both of South Carolina. He will also be missed by his extensive family in Sumter, SC.
The funeral service will be Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 12:30 at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, with Masonic Rites by Lodge #374. Interment will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. The family requests memorials be made to Masonic Lodge #374 building fund or to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church building fund.
