Edward D. (Butch) Barnhill, Jr. (78) passed away on March 3, 2026. He was born on February 6, 1948 in Gaffney, South Carolina to Edward D. Barnhill, Sr. and Nora Garrett Barnhill, both of whom predeceased him. He was a proud graduate of Wade Hampton High School, Furman University and University of South Carolina School of Law. Butch practiced law in Columbia, South Carolina for almost fifty years and focused his practice on commercial real estate. He was a long-time member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. He is survived by son Ben (Elaine) Barnhill of Greenville, SC and daughter Emily (Brunson) DePass of Columbia, SC and five adoring grandchildren--Barrett and Beau Barnhill as well as Beatrice, Mary Parker and William DePass. Butch is also survived by his loving companion S. Jane Todd, of Columbia, SC and her family and Ben and Emily's mother Jane Arnold Barnhill, of Columbia SC. Also surviving are his three sisters and their husbands and a plethora of admiring cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Butch was equally happy in a business suit practicing law or teaching Sunday School or in dirty play clothes breaking a piece of equipment at one of his properties. For as long as someone would listen, he would tell stories and was known for always being late because of stopping to talk to an old, or often brand new, friend. He traveled for more than fifty years in search of the next greatest hunting and fishing adventure and was able to do so until the last year of his life. Butch's family is most proud of how he treated with respect, and invested time in, everyone he met, regardless of their status or educational level.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Jasmine Place facility of Presbyterian Community of South Carolina in West Columbia for their remarkable love and care of Butch for his final year.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be sent to either the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, 2817 Ashland Rd, Columbia, SC 29210, designated for the West Columbia facility Employee Appreciation Fund, or to St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29210.
The memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock, Saturday, March 7th, at St. Andrews Baptist Church. The family will receive friends in the St. Andrews Baptist Church Sanctuary Atrium an hour before the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
