Edwin Middleton Grainger, Sr., 87, of Columbia, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, July 13, 2018. He was born in Dillon County, SC, on April 28, 1931, the son of the late Edwin Percy Grainger and Allie Middleton Grainger. He was married to the love of his life, Eleanor Bracey Grainger, for 66 years. Ed graduated Magna Cum Laude from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy. He was a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Regular US Army and served in the Korean War. Among the awards he received were the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He retired from General Motors Acceptance Corporation as a credit supervisor after 36 years of service.
Ed enjoyed his time with his family, especially in recent years with his two grandchildren. He enjoyed watching Clemson football, bluebird watching, gardening, and volunteering for AARP preparing income taxes for seniors. Ed could fix most anything around the house as well as any of his vehicles. He attended North Trenholm Baptist Church for over 50 years and was a member of the Early Risers Sunday School Class.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Dr. Joanne Grainger of Columbia; sons, Edwin M. Grainger, Jr. and Bryan Richard Grainger (Gena) of Florence and Ft. Mill, respectively; grandchildren, Adrienne Morgan Grainger and Bryan Austin Grainger of Ft. Mill; a special sister-in-law, Ann Fowler (Allen) of Proctorville, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his sister, Elizabeth Grainger Pittman.
The funeral service will be held 12 o'clock, Tuesday, July 17th, at North Trenholm Baptist Church with the Rev. Casey Williams, Rev. Joe Copeland and the Rev. Dr. Lacoste Munn presiding. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11 o'clock. The burial will follow the service in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, the Rev. David Knapp will officiate. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
