Obituary

Elizabeth "Bette" Burn Fennell, 87, formerly of Columbia, died Sunday, July 15, 2018. Born on December 7, 1930 in Charleston, SC, she was the daughter of the late Elmo McKinley Burn, Sr. and Ethel Stall Burn. After high school, Bette attended Furman University and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon graduation she worked at Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana, then lived in Paris, France, for two years. She returned to Charleston for a couple of years, eventually relocating to Columbia to raise her family. Bette grew up as a member of St. Barnabas Lutheran Church in Charleston and later joined the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation in Columbia. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and was an avid gardener her entire life.

Survivors include her three children, Jennifer Fennell of Anderson, SC, E. Kinard Fennell, Jr. of Rockingham, NC, Rebecca Fennell Paul (David) of Johns Creek, GA; grandchildren, Harrison Paul, McKinley Paul, Edwin Kinard "Trey" Fennell, III (Melanie), Carly Fennell McKay (Daniel); great grandchildren, Owen Fennell and Rhett McKay; brother, Edwin Irving "Bobby" Burn (Emily) Charleston, SC; as well as extended family members, David Michael Mathis (Rhonda) and their son, David, of Athens, GA. In addition to her parents, Bette was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Kinard Fennell, Sr., M.D.; brothers, Elmo McKinley Burn, Jr. and John Henry Burn; sister, Alma Louise Burn; as well as her daughter-in-law, Gloria Nye Fennell.

A graveside service for Bette will be held 2 o'clock, Friday, July 20th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends following the service beginning at 3 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext., Columbia.
