Erma Jane Justice Smith, 93, of Columbia, died Friday, August 5, 2016. Born March 9, 1923 in Donalsonville, GA, she was a daughter of Byron Bowers Justice and Ruby Lee Barnette Justice. Mrs. Smith was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. She and her husband were among the founders of Columbia Christian School. Mrs. Smith attended Columbia Bible College and earned a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education from The University of South Carolina. She taught school for more than 25 years in Richland School District One. Mrs. Smith was a former member of Arsenal Hill Presbyterian Church and later attended Northeast Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Vivian (Jerry) Curry; grandchildren, James B. Crawford and Jonathan L. Curry; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bernard (Ava) Justice. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Doyle William Smith; sisters, Mary Pearl Justice and Vivian Ozelma Fields; and brothers, Elmer "Bill" Justice and Buford Justice.
The graveside service for Mrs. Smith will be held 11 o'clock, Monday, August 8th at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens with The Rev. John Ropp officiating. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
