Edward Ernest "Ernie" Peake, 78, of West Columbia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Born in West Columbia, Ernie was the beloved son of the late Robert "Red" Peake and Virginia Powell Peake. A lifelong resident of his hometown, he built a life centered on family, friendship, and community.
Ernie dedicated more than 24 years of service to the South Carolina Employment Security Commission, where he formed lasting friendships with colleagues and employees alike. He was known for his warm personality, steady work ethic, and the genuine connections he made throughout his career.
He had a deep love for the outdoors and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ernie was also an enthusiastic supporter of education and proudly supported the South Carolina Lottery — taking great joy in scratching off tickets and celebrating his many small victories. Those who knew him best understood that his greatest happiness did not come from winnings, but from the time he spent surrounded by his family. Above all else, Ernie treasured his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and he never missed an opportunity to share stories, laughter, and love with them.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda Peake Heron (Jack); his grandchildren, Nicolas Fisher (Kelli), JW Heron, and Kayla Fisher; his great-grandchildren, Tanner Jones, Brayden Fisher, Carter Jones, Ariana Fisher, and Jaxon Jones; his brother, Carey B. Peake (Karen); many nieces and nephews; and his great-nephew and special buddy, Asher Waddell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert "Bobby" Peake, and his sisters, Janie Williams and Lana Raye Murray.
A private family service will be held to honor and celebrate his life.
