Mr. F. Douglas "Doug" Smith, 90, of Columbia, died Sunday, September 4, 2016. Born in Gastonia, NC, on May 8, 1926, he was a son of the late Roddey Faris Smith and Lois Neely Smith. A Navy veteran of WWII, Doug worked for many years as a comptroller in commercial construction. He was a caring and giving person, a man of deep faith, and an active member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Doug loved to cook and was an enthusiast for all sports, but his greatest joy came from being a husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather to the family he so dearly loved.

Doug is survived by his wife, Betty L. Smith; children, Kathryn Young (Jerry) of Colorado, Deborah Richardt (Robert) of New Jersey, and Douglas Smith (Pat) of Virginia; step-children, Jeff Davis (Joanne) of Georgia, and Darryl Davis (DiAnn) of South Carolina; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and brothers, Harold Smith (Barbara), and Carol Smith (Theresa) both of South Carolina. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, R.F. Smith; and sisters, Virginia Stroup, and Lib Stephenson.

The memorial service for Mr. Smith will be held at 11 o'clock, Wednesday, September 7th, at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, Columbia, with The Rev. Lee Butler officiating. The family will greet friends at the church, prior to the service, beginning at 10 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Crescent Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, or the Crescent Hill Baptist Church Food Pantry, 2659 Two Notch Rd., Columbia, SC 29204. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
