Florence Marie Beaumont Mitchell, amazing mother of eight, died surrounded by her family on December 19, 2016. She was affectionately known as Beau to her friends and Mer to her twenty-two grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 3, 1925, she was the adored only child of Florence Marie Koch Beaumont and Green Berry Beaumont. She grew up in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania where her life was filled with beautiful gardens, favorite pets and her lifelong passion for golf.
By the age of seven, Beau was playing golf at her home course, Merion Golf Club. By age 13, she was consistently posting scores in the 70's, earning an invitation to play regularly in her father's foursome. Beau played the great Dorothy Campbell Hurd Howe in a Club match at the age of 14. She continued the love of golf with her father on many great courses around the world.
She attended The Shipley School and Pine Manor College. In 1945, she met and married Dana Covington Mitchell, Jr. after a three-week whirlwind courtship. She would tell of how she knew "right away" that this was the man she wanted to marry. Two only children shared fifty years together and had the large family they both always wanted. Beau and Dana moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1948 after living in Beaufort, South Carolina and Cincinnati, Ohio. Dana began practicing Internal Medicine with O. B. Mayer. Their quiet life as only children was replaced with wonderful years of love, laughter and controlled chaos.
Beau was a member of Merion Golf Club and Forest Lake Club, where she was a three-time Women's Golf Champion (one of those championships while five months pregnant). She also was a member of The Columbia Ball, the Junior League of Columbia, Junior League Reading Club, Columbia Garden Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Beau Mitchell had many loves but none greater than family. She was fiercely loyal, and an amazing mother and grandmother. She will be missed every moment of every day.
