Obituary

Frances Elizabeth Lowder Crump died on November 29, 2025; she was born on May 3, 1940 at her parents' home in Wadesboro, Anson County, N.C. to Guilford Martin Lowder and Mary Jewel Meachum Lowder. She was the youngest of her seven siblings and the last of her family, and of the Lowder grandchildren. Her family had lived in Anson County for over 250 years. She grew up in the Lilesville community, attending Lilesville schools.

As a young woman, she moved to Columbia, S.C. and worked while attending night school for a degree in cosmetology. She was employed by Lee's Hairstyling and had a wonderful camaraderie with her clients and their families. She remained lifelong friends with several of the families, all of which became a part of her husband and children's lives.

One evening she attended a dance at the USO in Columbia, and was taken by the looks of a young soldier from Fort Jackson, telling her girlfriends that she was going to "show him," and purposefully spilled a cup of coffee on him, to which he took her hand and led her on to the dance floor. She invited him to church the next morning and some months later they were married on her birthday May 3rd, at Faith Lutheran surrounded by family and friends. She was married to Joseph L. Crump for 64 years.

They moved to Tulsa Oklahoma where they had their first child, Melinda, and then moved back to Columbia where they had sons, Joseph M. and Matthew. The family attended Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild. She was a good mother and wife, making healthy meals, keeping a very clean house and believing in fresh air and the outdoors for her children. She was involved in school activities, as homeroom mom and serving with the PTA. When her children were older she worked at the YWCA, The Red Cross, and Claire Towers.

She enjoyed Lake Murray and sailing with family and friends, her husband flying the family on plane trips, and many weeks and weekends at the beach. She loved her flowers and was content in her garden or with her friends talking over a glass of iced tea. Her grandchildren were her joy and life. She loved to rock them to sleep and to ride them around her yard on a blanket placed in a in a wheelbarrow. Later attending special events in their lives, always excited to see them excel, she rarely missed school and sporting events. She enjoyed family gatherings and meals shared around the dining room table; smiles and laughter. She noticed the things that made life special, and was appreciative of time and gifts from those she loved.

She came from a large and extended family, and married into another large and extended family. She has many loving nephews and nieces and cousins on both sides. She is survived by her husband Joseph L. Crump, children: Melinda Crump, Joseph M. and Renee Crump; Matthew and Susan Crump. Her grandchildren: Hampton Crump, Thomas Crump, Sarah Crump, Vivian Crump and Olivia Crump. Brother in law John and wife, Glenda Crump, Sisters in Law: Judy Crump, Sharon Crump, and Margie Lowder. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Benjamin Lowder (Mildred), Anna Lowder Thompson,(Buddy), Ernest Lowder, Jewel Carinna Lowder, Louise Lowder Leach( Jerry), Connie L. Diggs (Sam). In Laws: Connie Crump Davidson, (Austin), Kenneth Crump (Janice), Bob Crump (Mary), Bill Crump, Norma Crump Hayes (John), Larry Crump.
