Frances Elizabeth Wallace Powell

Frances Elizabeth Wallace Powell, 78, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Born October 27, 1947, in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Jay Wallace and Willie Mae “Dit” Cornwell Wallace.

Mrs. Powell was a graduate of Columbia High School, Class of 1965. She continued her education at the Baptist Hospital School of Surgical Nursing, where she pursued a career in surgical nursing. While working under the direction of Dr. Charles R. Sloan, she became the first nationally certified surgical technician in the State of South Carolina, a distinction that reflected her dedication, skill, and commitment to her profession.

A lifelong member of Columbia United Methodist Church, Mrs. Powell faithfully served her church in many capacities, including as a Lay Reader. She was actively involved in countless church activities and cherished the friendships and fellowship she found there.

Frances had a love for flowers and especially enjoyed growing her beautiful irises. Above all, she treasured her family and the time she spent with them, particularly her beloved grandsons. Her warmth, devotion, and love for those around her touched the lives of many.

She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Survivors include her loving husband, George R. Powell; daughter, Avis Bell Powell Lindler (Joey) of Chapin, SC; grandsons, Joseph A. “J.J.” Lindler, Jr. and Joshua E. Lindler; brother, Harry Wallace (Wayne) of Hartsville, SC; sister, Grace Brickle (Terry) of Moncks Corner, SC; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Eddie Wallace.

The funeral service for Mrs. Powell will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 15, 2026, in the chapel of Columbia United Methodist Church, 1830 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201, with Rev. Ashley McCoy-Bruce officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC 29204.

The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday in the fellowship hall of the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Columbia United Methodist Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
