Mr. Frank Francis Fernley, 87, of Chapin, died Saturday, August 8, 2015. Born on January 11, 1928 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he was the son of the late Timothy Alonzo Fernley and Julia Cavin Fernley. As a young man, Mr. Fernley was a well-respected boxer, and he was later a member of the Army's boxing team. He served in the Navy, Army, and then the Air Force until his retirement, and afterwards, worked for a number of years as a very successful sales representative for the Hav-A-Tampa Cigar Company. Frank lived an outgoing and active life, and he enjoyed his work with the Carolina Children's Home following his retirement. He was a Mason and a Shriner, and he loved playing bingo and bowling until illness prevented him. Frank will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
Frank is survived by his daughter, Karen F. Fernley; granddaughter, Heather Hendrix Brown; great-granddaughter, Victoria Lynn "Tori" Brown; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Nora Nee Underhill, Norma Nan Van Hoosier, Margaret Mary Moore and Julia Ann Browning; and by his former wife, Miriam B. Fernley.
A funeral service for Mr. Frank F. Fernley will be held at 1 o'clock, Wednesday, August 12th, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, with Bishop Randy L. Caulder officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12 o'clock. Memorials may be made to either the South Carolina Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210; or to the National Spinal Cord Injury Association, 1660 L Street NW, Suite 504, Washington, DC 20036.
