Fred Oscar Martin was born by God's grace to the late Fred Daniel and Effie Mae Chambers Martin on March 21, 1929. He was returned into God's grace and caring hands on December 7, 2013. He is survived by his children, Fred Randall Martin, Sr., his wife Kim S. Martin, Robin Martin Gerrish and husband Tom Gerrish, Rhonda Martin Dennis and husband Ricky Dennis. He was blessed with 16 grandchildren, Fred Randall Martin, Jr., and wife Sheree C. Martin, John G. Martin and wife Melissa B. Martin, Ricky Dennis, Jr., and wife Julie Ray Dennis, Lindsey Morris Stemba and husband Raymond Stemba, Clay Morris and wife Melanie Amerson, Rachael Morris, Katie Steingass, Robbie Steingass, and Elizabeth Rose Martin; step-grandson, Robert Wesley "Lee" Morris, Jr., and wife Kristyn P. Morris. Included in God's blessings are his great-grandchildren, Jewel, Raven, Krislyn, and Lilly Martin, Madison Rose Stemba, and Shane Amerson.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert and Alfred Martin.
He was the proud uncle of 19 nieces and nephews, 31 great nieces and nephews, and 18 great-great nieces and nephews. The greatest joy in his life was his family and friends. He will be remembered as a kind, loving and giving father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend.
Mr. Martin was a graduate of Spring Valley High School. He was a retired supervisor of Support Services at Richland School District Two and was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church. He loved being in his Sunday School Class and his daily trips to Lizard's Thicket. He loved to tease, joke and socialize with the staff at the restaurant who made his life so enjoyable with their caring service.
Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock, Wednesday, December 11th at North Trenholm Baptist Church with The Rev. R. Joseph Copeland officiating. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Tuesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, Fred Randall "Randy" Martin, Jr., John G. Martin, Richard "Ricky" G. Dennis, Jr., Marshall Clayton "Clay" Morris, Raymond Stemba, Robert "Robbie" Steingass, and nephew, Barry Martin. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Wesley "Lee" Morris, Jr., and the members of Mr. Martin's Bowen's Sunday School Class.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to all of the medical staff and doctors who worked so diligently to make his remaining days on this earth comfortable by providing such loving and professional care.
