Furman Gibbs Raines, 91, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024. Born in Blythewood, South Carolina, on September 8, 1932, he was a son of the late James Ernest Raines and Evelyn Neeley Raines.
He was the loving husband to Mrs. Reesie Mae Raines. He and Reesie shared a strong marriage of devotion and support to each other from 1967 until her passing in 2014. They were active members of Eau Claire Baptist Church for over 55 years, regularly serving behind the scenes wherever needed. Following his retirement from E & A Wastewater Service, Mr. Raines worked part time for Wal-Mart selling boiled peanuts. He enjoyed fishing, working on antique trucks and cars, and gardening. Mr. Raines took great pride in being a grandfather, great-grandfather, and spending quality time with his family.
Survivors include his children, Shirley Bennett, Janice Padgett (Tommy), James Raines, and Kenneth Raines; grandchildren, Melissa Booth (Jamie), Jeff Harrell (Andrea), Phil Padgett (Allison), Chris Raines, Eric Raines, Melissa Kraft (Kelly), Troy Raines; 12 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; brother, Joe Raines (Sue); and beloved chorkie, Brandy. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by children, Donald Bennett, Gene Raines, and Wanda Bennett; siblings, Clarence Raines, Curtis Raines, Portia Loner, Bertha Younginer, Laura Marthers, and Ollie Steadman.
The Funeral Service for Mr. Raines will be held at 11 o'clock on Friday, April 5th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock at the funeral home.
