George Melvin Brinson, 72, of Columbia, died Monday, January 2, 2017. Born in Colleton County, SC, he was a son of the late Simeon and Ernestine Rebecca Barnes Brinson. Melvin graduated from Columbia High School, Class of 1962, and served in the South Carolina Air National Guard until 1968. He spent 10 years in the lumber business with his father at Brinson Lumber, over 30 years building and remodeling homes as the owner of Brinson Contracting, and later with his brother at Brinson Cleaners.

Melvin is survived by his son, George E. Brinson; grandchildren, Anthony, Chastity, and Michael, all of West Columbia; siblings, Mary B. Drawdy (Jim) of Memphis, TN, Lois B. Crosby of Williamston, SC, Shirley B. Jenerette (Harold) of Columbia, SC, Charles E. Brinson of North, SC, Allen R. Brinson, Sr. (Martha), and Ronald S. Brinson, both of Columbia, SC; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a sister, Margie B. Dority.

A memorial service will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday January 7th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will greet friends following the service. Interment in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery will be private.
