Obituary

​Raymond to his friends, and "Sonny" to his family, George Raymond McElveen Jr. died Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community. Born in Columbia on August 26, 1932, he was the son of George Raymond McElveen and Susan Vergereau Powers. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Harriet "Sissy" Felder of Charleston. They have three children, George Raymond McElveen, III (Claire), Harriet McElveen Rice (Adger), and Charles Tennent McElveen (deceased) (Christi).

​A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Raymond spent three years in the United States Air Force as a navigator, attaining the rank of Captain. He attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law. In private practice in Columbia for over thirty years, he was, for a time, in partnership with both his father and his son. He served as a delegate to the American Bar Association. Raymond was a lifelong member and elder emeritus of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia. He was active in the establishment of the First Presbyterian Church Retirement Center at Laurel Crest. Raymond was a charter member and past president of the St. Andrew's Society of the City of Columbia, and active in a number of civic and social organizations.

​In addition to his wife and children, Raymond is survived by a sister, Susan McElveen Graybill (Jack), and a brother, Robert Elliott McElveen (Sally). He was predeceased by a brother, William Powers McElveen (Emma). He has five grandchildren, Aaron Adger Rice III, Raymond McElveen "Mac" Rice, Catherine Stafford McElveen, Susanna "Zannie" Tennent McElveen and Marianna "Mae" Lunden McElveen.

​Visitation will be at the home of Harriet and Adger Rice on Friday, January 27th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, 1324 Marion Street, at 10:30 am. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street, Columbia, SC 29201; Laurel Crest Retirement Center, 100 Joseph Walker Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169; or to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
