Gary Sewell Roberson, 81, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2024. Born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on January 17, 1943, he was a son of the late Cleo Connie Roberson and Helen Sewell Roberson. He was a member of Sandhills Community Church in Columbia, South Carolina.
Gary graduated from Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi and earned his Bachelor of Science in statistics from the University of Mississippi. He proudly served in the United States Army as first lieutenant intelligence officer of G2 CINPAC during the Vietnam war. He successfully accomplished the development of and establishment of an intelligence data processing system at Fort Shatner, Hawaii for which he received an Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service, he worked for IBM, General Instruments, and Sperry Corporation. In 1986 Gary moved his family to Columbia when he accepted the position of President of Digital Systems Inc., a software company. His last and most rewarding career was as a Certified Financial Planner. He took very good care of his clients because they became like family to him. He and his beloved wife were avid Gamecock fans and loved cheering on the football team. He also loved playing golf and cards with his close buddies. To know Gary, was simply to love him. He is fondly remembered for his kindness and always bringing joy to those around him. Gary was a true family man whose pride and joy in life were his "girls."
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Carmen K. Roberson; three daughters, Coulter R. Templeton (Craig), Ashley "Asha" Roberson (Keith), and Erica Roberson Applegate; grandchildren, Savannah, Nathaniel, Garrison, Hayden Grace, and Bella; brother, Kelley C. Roberson; and beloved dog, Sophie. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brother, Richard "Dick" Roberson.
The memorial service for Gary will be held at 4:30 o'clock at Sandhills Community Church, 3513 Hardscrabble Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 3:30 o'clock at the church. A private interment will take place at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel is assisting the family.
