Dr. George McMillan Reeves, Jr., 91, of Columbia, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013. Born in Spartanburg on October 18, 1921, he was a son of the late George McMillan Reeves, Sr. and Bina Fay Garvey Reeves. George was a US Army veteran of World War II. In over 40 years of service, Dr. Reeves was Dean of the Graduate School of the University of South Carolina for 20 years, chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages, and Acting Provost for three years.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Reeves; son, George M. Reeves, III of Asheville, NC; daughters, Marianne Reeves of Cleveland, OH, Kate Reeves and Alison Reeves, both of Columbia; nieces, Miriam (Peter) Shillingsburg, Cynthia Hardie, Martha (Michael) Auten, Elizabeth (Don) Whitener; and nephews, Thomas (Barbara) Powers and William (Jenny) McMillan Powers. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by sisters, Miriam Jones and Natalie Powers.
A memorial service for Dr. Reeves will be held at 11 o'clock, Friday, July 19th, at the Rutledge Chapel on the Historic Horseshoe of the University of South Carolina. The eulogy will be given by Dr. John Palms. Entombment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery Mausoleum. The family will receive friends in Rutledge Chapel prior to the service, beginning at 10 o'clock.
Dr. Reeves finished his graduate degree with the help of a Fulbright Grant and the GI Bill. In his honor the family asks that memorials be made to the George M. Reeves Fellowship, Byrnes Building, Ste 304, 901 Sumter St, Columbia, SC 29208.
