George Louis Taylor, 98, of Columbia, died Friday, February 17, 2023. Born in Blythewood, SC on November 19, 1924, he was the son of William and Thelma Howell Taylor. He spent his early years on the family farm until called upon by the US Army to serve his country in World War II. After the war, he worked with United Insurance Company until his retirement. George was married to the love of his life, Margaret Hazel Taylor, for 72 years. A member of Reformation Lutheran Church, he loved the Lord, his family and riding his tractor on the family farm. A man of few words, George will be remembered for his selflessness, bravery and the depth of his character. He truly deserved to be numbered among 'The Greatest Generation'.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Margaret, of Columbia; four (4) children, Diane T. Bozard (Steve) of Lexington, Jimmy H. Taylor (Wanda) of Columbia, Terry L. Taylor (Kristen) of Lexington and Valerie L. Shealy (Frank) of Blythewood; nine (9) grandchildren, R. Nicole Capilos, J. Brandon Bozard, S. Taylor Bozard, Andrew C. Taylor, Brett L. Taylor, Sarah E. Shealy (Cecil Morrell), Matthew E., Emma N. and S. Paul Shealy; and two (2) great-grandchildren, S. Peyton and R. Kinsley Oliphant. George was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, William Richard "Pete" Taylor, Ola Mae Taylor, Myrtle Luvenia Paschal, Dossal, James, Frank, and the Rev. Edward N. Taylor.
The graveside service for Mr. Taylor will be held at 2 o'clock, Monday, February 20th at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Rd, Columbia, SC 29204. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o'clock Sunday, February 19th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. Columbia, SC 29223.
