George Preston Walker, Sr., 90, of Columbia, died Monday, February 11, 2013, at Agape Senior, Harbison. Born June 8, 1922, in Winnsboro, SC, he was a son of the late Ernest and Martha Humphries Walker. A US Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Walker fought in the battle for Iwo Jima. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Survivors include son, George Preston Walker, Jr. and his wife, Sharon; daughter, Carol Walker Gunter and husband, Nelson; grandson, Brian Nelson Gunter and wife, Ronya; granddaughter, Angela Marie Gunter Black; sister, Anne W. Haynes; and five great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Evelyn Hallman Walker; brothers, Leo, Charles, and Ernest Walker; and sister, Minnie Inez Walker Timms Wells.
The funeral service for Mr. Walker will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, with The Rev. John Jordan officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Serenity Gardens, 6601 Windwan Dr, Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock.
