Obituary

Glen Bruce Ward, 73, of West Columbia, met his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. He passed away at Lexington medical Center, with his wife and children by his side.

Glen was born on June 28, 1947 in Columbia, SC and was the son of the late Otto and Mamie Ward. He graduated from Eau Claire High school and from the University of South Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science and Engineering. Glen enjoyed a 35-year career as a civil engineer with SC Depart of Highway and Transportation, retiring in 2005.

Glen enjoyed sharing his younger life with his brother Gene, and many cousins, learning to fish and hunt at his grandparents' farm. At the age of 9, Glen accepted Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior, and was mentored by wonderful Christians in the faith. He became an ordained deacon at Colonial Heights Baptist Church in 1973. He also taught boys Sunday school classes, often taking them on camping trips to share his love of fishing. His favorite memories as a teenager are when his friends would get together at the Mitchell home to play music on a Saturday night, go out bowling all night, and be sitting in the choir on Sunday morning, ready to worship.

Glen and Georgia met at church, had eyes only for each other and married in 1972. They were blessed with 3 wonderful children, who were raised in the church from day one. Glen was a steady and loving support to all that the children were involved in. When Glen's health became such that he could no longer hunt and fish, he continued his love of gardening, and long-time hobby of stamp collection. He had continued to acquire new friends through mentoring them with his knowledge of stamps. He could always strike up a conversation with anyone.

In the last several years, Glen and Georgia enjoyed traveling with Prosperity Travel Group to the Grand Canyon, South Dakota, and Maine. It became a favorite pastime to just sit outside, watching the sunset together, and reminiscing of the old days.

Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Georgia Freeman Ward; children Valerie, Michael, and Angela Ward; brother, Gene Ray Ward; aunt, Bobbie Laird; brother-in-law, John Freeman (Kathy); sisters-in-law, Carolyn Richardson (Bobby), and Denna Howell (Jim); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, and great nephews. In addition to his parents, Glen is preceded in death by his half-sister, Carolyn Wolfe; aunt, Eula Adams (Perry); uncle, Burley Ezekiel (Lucille); brothers-in-law, Fred A. Freeman (Linda), and Randolph L. Freeman.

A funeral service for Glen will be held 1 o'clock, Saturday, January 23, 2021, at New Heights Church with The Rev. John Bremer officiating. Burial will follow at Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 12 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
