SFC Glenn Carlton Sawyer, Sr. US Army (Ret.), 80, of Columbia, died Saturday, June 30, 2018. Born in Spartanburg, SC, on November 29, 1937, he was a son of the late William Otto Sawyer and Faye Porter Sawyer. SFC Sawyer was a Vietnam War veteran and honorably served his country for 20 years until his retirement in 1978. During his second career, he worked in civil service at Fort Jackson for seventeen years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a true patriot.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Bennett Sawyer; children, Glenn Sawyer, Jr., Steven Sawyer (Barbara), Tracy Glaz (John-Mark); grandchildren, Kayla Minter (Aaron), Ashley Sawyer, Jessa Glaz, John-Mark Glaz, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Lilly, Andrew, and Eleanor Minter; brother, William O. Sawyer, Jr. (Edna); brothers-in-law, Jimmy Burns, Archie Upton and Bill Dietz. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Patti Sawyer; as well as his siblings, Clara Lynn Adair, Paul Sawyer, Nelda Dietz, Judith Burns, Frankie Upton and Grace Ann Sawyer.

A graveside service for SFC Sawyer, will be held 11 o'clock, Tuesday, July 3rd, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Monday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
