Obituary

Mrs. Glennie Whitlock Smith, 103, widow of James Otis Smith, died Sunday, June 22, 2014. Born July 10, 1910 in Sulfur Springs (Candor), NC she was a daughter of the late James Foster Whitlock and Loucretia McAskill Whitlock.

She was a member of Park Street Baptist Church since 1935 where she taught Sunday school for 35 years and served in other capacities. She was a volunteer for the Council on Child Abuse; a member of the Columbia Astronomy Club and on its board of directors; and in other voluntary capacities.

Mrs. Smith moved to Columbia with her husband in 1930, and much later, to The Heritage at Lowman (then called the Lowman Home) in 1995. Survivors include numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins mostly in North and South Carolina.

A service of Celebration and Thanksgiving will be held at 11 o'clock, Wednesday, June 25th, at The Heritage at Lowman Chapel, 2101 Dutch Fork Rd., White Rock, SC, with The Rev. John P. Trump and The Rev. Vickie Powell officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel following the service, and then proceed to Greenlawn Memorial Park for burial. The family would like to extend a special appreciation to Shela Jerome, BeWell Home Services companion of Lutheran Homes, who lovingly ministered to Glennie during her last two years; to the Adria Staff at Heritage at Lowman; to Lutheran Hospice; to the members of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, and to others who made Glennie's long life more comfortable and enjoyable.
