Gloria Phyllis Reese Black, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at the age of 83. Born in Columbia, SC, on July 27, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Reese and Sara Doris Kelly Reese.
Gloria was a woman of many talents and accomplishments. She was an accomplished seamstress, creating beautiful wedding dresses for her daughters. She was a passionate gardener, known for her beautiful blooms, and a fabulous cook who delighted her family and friends with her delicious meals. Gloria was also deeply committed to her community and her church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, volunteering her time and talents to help others.
A graduate of Palmer College, Gloria's intelligence and leadership were evident from a young age. She was a member of the National Beta Club, a 4-H member, played on the girls' basketball team in high school, and was Miss Lower Richland. Her peers recognized her kindness and spirit, voting her Miss Hi-Miss and selecting her as the Richland County representative to Girls State.
Gloria's memory will be cherished by all who knew her. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed.
Gloria is survived by her husband, Talbert J. Black, Sr.; her children, Summer Black Solum (Steve), Stacey Black Mallory (Kevin), Talbert James Black, Jr. (Ming-Fen), Suzannah Kelly Black, Stephanie Black Solum (John), and Shannon Elizabeth Thoman-Black (Mercede); her brothers, Jesse "Buddy" Reese, Jr. (Virginia) and James Howell Reese (Barbara); 32 grandchildren; and 49 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Fred Kennedy Reese.
A funeral service to celebrate Gloria's life will be held at 10 o'clock on Saturday, December 21st, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2224 Augusta Hwy, Lexington, SC, with Bishop Joshua Hollinger officiating. Burial will follow at 12:30pm at Denmark Cemetery, 18717 Heritage Hwy, Denmark, SC.
The family will receive guests from 6 until 8 o'clock Friday, December 20th at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC as well as one hour prior to the service in the Relief Society Room of the church.
