Mr. Gregory James Best, 55, of Columbia, died on Wednesday, January 3, 2013. Born January 8, 1957, in Pikeville, KY, he was the only child of Richard J. Best and the late Mary Louise Smiley Best.
Mr. Best attended Kent State University in Kent, OH. He enjoyed working as a disc jockey in his early years, later serving as an insurance advisor and estate planner while holding membership in the Int'l Assn of Financial Planning, and the Society of Senior Advisors. He studied at Crossroads Bible College, and was most recently employed with Midlands Honda and JT's Kia. He attended First Baptist Church of Columbia, where he was a member of the Joy of Living Sunday School Class.
Mr. Best was a spirit-filled, Godly man whose quiet, confident, and joyful nature was a blessing to those who knew him. He was a loving, devoted, amazing husband who was cherished and respected by his loving wife, Barbara. He adored his children and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. He was an avid golfer, a lover of the outdoors, and a master griller. He was a very talented writer of Christian fiction who hoped to publish his work one day. He was also a sweet and caring "kitty dad." Joy, hope, and God's Word were his constant companions.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Barbara Best of Columbia; daughter, Lauren Best of Blythewood; son, Alexander Best of Moody Air Force Base, GA; father and step-mother, Richard J. and Josephine Best; aunt, Norma Nelson of Ohio; and his cat Whisper.
A funeral service for Mr. Best was held 3 o'clock, Sunday, January 6th, at Boyce Chapel of First Baptist Church, Columbia,S.C with The Rev. Dennis Banks officiating.
