Gwendolyn L. "Gwen" Lyons, 94, of Columbia, died Wednesday, August 15, 2018. Born September 13, 1923 in Aiken County, she was a daughter of the late Fred Monroe Johnson and Monteree Johnson. Following high school graduation Gwen wanted to do her part for the war effort and ventured to Washington, DC to serve in the secretarial pool for the military. Following the war she returned to Columbia and continued to raise her young family. At 44 years of age Gwen went to nursing school and retired after 20 years of service to Baptist Hospital. She was a faithful member of Park Street Baptist Church and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, for whom she had served as chaplain.
Survivors include her daughters, Jane Lyons Mayzes (Samuel) and Ann Lyons Haynes; grandchildren, Cindy Holland, Ben Holland Jr., Paul Heger, Robert Darrell Lyons (Sheila) and Brian Neese (Angela); nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Frances Wiedemann Vaughan and Paul Johnson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Claude Lyons; and a son, Allen C. Lyons.
The funeral service for Mrs. Lyons will be held 1 o'clock, Saturday, August 18th at Park Street Baptist Church with Pastor Jay Black officiating. Interment will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, is assisting the family.
