Hugh Roger Smith, 67, beloved husband of Jane Lever Smith, was received in the arms of his loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday, August 19, 2012. Born in Royston, Georgia, Roger was the son of the late Hugh Ralph Smith and Winnie Moore Smith.
Roger retired after over 40 years as owner and operator of Bel Air Barber Shop of Columbia. He was a past deacon and youth leader in the Baptist Church and spent many hours passing out gospel tracts at the beaches and on the streets of Columbia. He was a loving father and grandfather and his motto was "it is better to give than to receive." He was a current member of Shandon Baptist Church.
Roger is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife, Jane Lever Smith; daughters, Konnie (Wayne) Jordan of Columbia, Kim (Michael) Raines of Elgin; six grandchildren, Matthew (Megan) Warren, Jeremy (Christen) Warren, Hannah Warren, Megan Raines and fiancé Darren, Rebekah Raines and Austin Raines; one great-grandson, Hunter Warren; and another great grandchild expected in January; sister, Lynn Clark of Hilton Head; as well as his puppies, Angel and PeeWee. In addition to his mother and father, Roger was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Virginia Lever.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. A private burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park at a later date with The Rev. Barry Gray officiating. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
