Rev. Harold Preston Adkins, 82, of Columbia, died Monday, January 2, 2017 at his home. He was born April 1, 1934, in Arabi, Georgia to the late G.T. and Aileen Gazaway Adkins.
Rev. Adkins was a graduate of Bryan College in Tennessee and Southwestern Baptist Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He served as a Presbyterian minister to churches in Thomasville, GA, Lafayette, GA, Waynesboro, GA, Mobile, AL, Columbus, GA, and Timmonsville, SC. Rev. Adkins also served as Chaplain at Tucker Nursing Home and a Marriage and Family Counselor. He loved fishing, baseball, and was a talented artist and did woodworking and carving. He loved his family and being with them. Rev. Adkins was loved and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Betsy Wallis Adkins; son, Anthony Adkins (Nicole); daughter, Heather Sendler; grandchildren, Preston Adkins, Hailey Adkins, and Hope Sendler, all of Columbia, SC; brother, Everette Adkins (Wanda) of Cordele, GA; nephew, Keith Adkins, niece, Melody Mendenhall (Bo); and his beloved dog, Dundee.
The memorial service for Rev. Adkins will be held 2:00 o'clock, Friday, January 6th, at Petersen Presbyterian Church, 8131 Brookfield Road, Columbia, with Pastor Jim Blackwelder officiating. A reception will follow the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
