Obituary

Columbia: Harriet Darby Lewis, 96, of Columbia, died Monday, May1, 2017. Born February 12, 1921, in Chester, SC, she was a daughter of the late Theodore Mobley Darby and the late Jane Isabel Hardee Darby.

In 1945 Miss Darby married Stanley Vernier Lewis. They celebrated 59 anniversaries before his death in 2004. She attended Virginia Intermont Junior College in Bristol, VA and graduated with a B.S. from the University of South Carolina. She spent most of her career working at Fort Jackson as civilian head of the accounting department, where her expertise in the accounting field was well known throughout the Department of the Army. Programs she initiated were adopted by other installations across the country. She earned the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the Department of the Army upon retirement.

Shandon Presbyterian was her beloved church for many years. Her service there included positions of Elder and leadership in the women's ministry. For the latter she received the distinction of an Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Before his death Mr. and Mrs. Lewis enjoyed trips to many parts of the world and sailing in the Atlantic and Caribbean Oceans. They were also accomplished bridge players, a pastime she enjoyed well into her nineties. She was also an avid gardener filling her home almost year round with beautiful flowers.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Catherine and Ray Paquette, Charlie and Missy Aslund, Jane and Bob Hooper, Carl and Jane Aslund, Thomas and Lynn Hutchins, Jack Hutchins, Jane and Kevin Smith, Sarah Ann Hutchins, Sandra and Larry Poole, Rusty and Cindy Darby, Kelly and Joe Frazier, and Harriet and Steven Palecek. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her two brothers, Francis Guy Darby Sr. and Theodore Mobley Darby Jr.; her two sisters, Jane Isabel Darby Aslund and Sarah Darby Hutchins; as well as her nephew, Theodore Darby Aslund.

The family expresses their appreciation for the loving care given by the Presbyterian Community and to Jeannie Lewis, her treasured caregiver for years, along with numerous others who assisted with her faithful care..

Interment will be at 10:30 o'clock Friday, May 5 at Zion Presbyterian Church Cemetery in the Lowrys Community of Chester, SC, with The Rev. Al Ward officiating. A celebration of life for Mrs. Lewis will follow at 2:00 o'clock, Friday, May 5 at the Chapel of Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina, 700 DaVega Dr., Lexington, with Dr. Fran Bragan officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following in the Tapp Dining Room. Memorials may be made to Shandon Presbyterian Church, 607 Woodrow St., Columbia, SC 29205. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
