Harry Ulman Hollis, Jr, a dedicated microbiologist, accomplished cyclist, alpine climber, kayaker, craftsman, private pilot, and artist, passed away on April 12, 2023, at the age of 90. Harry's remarkable life was characterized by his insatiable curiosity, passion for adventure, and remarkable kindness. Harry was born May 21, 1932, in Columbia, SC to Harry Ulman Hollis, Sr and Glady Belle Hutto Hollis.

Harry's journey began in Columbia, SC, where he attended Columbia High School and developed an early fascination with education and the natural world. After high school, he served in the Air Force during the Korean War. Following his service, he pursued his passion for learning and earned his bachelor's degree in Education, Spanish and Biology from the University of South Carolina. Following the earning of his degree, Harry worked as a Spanish teacher at Dreher High School, fish hatchery manager for the Department of the Interior, and found his calling as a microbiologist.

Harry worked tirelessly for 30 years as a public servant, focused on public health for the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control. But Harry's accomplishments were not limited to public service. He was also an accomplished outdoor enthusiast and athlete. Harry's love for cycling took him on epic adventures across the United States with multiple cross-country cycling trips, winning many state and national titles including holding the state record for the 25-mile individual time trial. He remained an avid cyclist throughout his life.

Harry also spent a considerable portion of his life climbing mountains in the Rockies. His passion for alpine climbing led him to establish climbing routes in some of the nation's most challenging peaks in Grand Teton National Park. Harry's love for the natural world and exploration extended to kayaking, where he spent countless hours paddling the lakes and rivers of Wyoming and the estuaries of coastal SC. Enjoying the picturesque vistas and wildlife that the nation has to offer. He also indulged a love for flying as a private pilot, taking to the skies and exploring the nation from different perspectives. Harry's adventurous spirit and zest for life inspired many, and he was known for his tenacity, fearlessness in the face of challenges, and boundless kindness.

Beyond his scientific and athletic pursuits, Harry was also a skilled electrician, carpenter, and mason. After his retirement, he took up work assisting in maintenance needs for the Grand Teton Climbers Ranch and Pioneer Homestead retirement community in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He could often be found working at his house or assisting his family and friends on home projects.
Later in life Harry discovered a passion for painting. His creativity and artistic talents were prolific and admired by many – showing a deep understanding of color, composition and a unique perspective of the world.
