Obituary

LTC Harry Douglas Hunter, US Army (Ret.), 81, of Columbia, died Thursday, January 18, 2018. Born July 22, 1936 in Prosperity, SC he was a son of the late Elbert Hayne and Loudia Mae Boozer Hunter. Col. Hunter was raised in Elizabethton, TN and Monks Corner, SC. He graduated from Wofford College with a BA in Mathematics in 1958, and was married the late Lillian Rosetta Youmans Hunter in 1959. He served in the US Army from 1959 to 1983 including two tours in Vietnam. Following his service to his country, he worked in the insurance field until his retirement and was a member of College Place United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends and attending church services.

Survivors include his daughter, Teresa O'Brien (Glenn) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl; a son, Harry Douglas Hunter, Jr; of Alexandria, VA; grandson, Connor O'Brien of Ponte Vedra, FL; and brother, Donald Hunter (Ann) of Conway, SC; as well as nieces and cousins.

The funeral service for Col. Hunter will be held 1 o'clock, Tuesday, January 23rd, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. Interment with military honors will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12 o'clock. Memorials may be made to College Place United Methodist Church, 4801 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
