Hazel Dowey Cameron McCravy, 80, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Ridgeway, SC, died on the afternoon of September 7th, 2021 at Westminster Memory Care in Aiken, SC. Hazel was born on February 16, 1941 in Blaney, SC. She was predeceased by her father, John T. Dowey of Blaney, SC and her mother, Beulah Easler Dowey Senn of Killian, SC. She was also predeceased by her first husband, Richard F. Cameron; second husband, John L. McCravy, Jr; and nephew, Scott Richardson.

Mrs. McCravy is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Colony (Wayne), of Aiken, SC; son, David Cameron (Joan), of Columbia, SC; step-son, Mark McCravy, of Columbia, SC; brothers, Johnny Dowey, of Ridgeway,SC and Charles Dowey (Donna) of Columbia, SC; sister, Jeanne Oltmann of Santee, SC; sister and best friend, JoAnn Null, of Elgin, SC; nieces, Lisa Maxwell, Kim Moses (Sam), and Wendy Dowey.

Mrs. McCravy attended the Dentsville Schools from the first grade until she graduated Dentsville High School Class of 1959. Hazel and her first husband lived many places, as far away as Libya and Alaska, while following his career. Hazel had worked 20 years in the legal field with attorneys in Anchorage, Alaska, Richmond, Virginia, Lexington, South Carolina, and Tampa, Florida.

She was the matriarch and "glue" of her family. She loved her family very much and they loved her back. Especially when she was in the kitchen preparing her dressing to go with the holiday turkey or turning out a batch of her famous oatmeal or peanut butter cookies.

Hazel was an avid gardener and skilled at many forms of arts and crafts. She kept her home surrounded by a number of dogs and hummingbirds who were part of the family. And she never saw a yard sale, junk shop, or antique store she didn't love.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 11th, 2021 at 10 AM, at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Rd Ext., Columbia, SC, with The Reverend Greg Dowey of The Fresh Church officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be at the funeral home following the service.
