Hazel Carter Smith, 92, of Columbia, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Born in Chester County, SC on November 28, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin T. and Lois Worthy Carter. Mrs. Smith was an active member of Eau Claire Baptist Church, where she taught GA's, worked in the nursery for over 30 years, and prepared meals for Wednesday night activities. She was also a homemaker and seamstress for many in the Columbia area.

She is survived by her daughter, Nickie Susan Riley (Tim) of Lexington; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas P. Smith, a son, Richard Allen Poston, and daughter, Teresa Smith McKenzie.
The service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 1 o'clock on Monday, February 6th at Eau Claire Baptist Church with the Rev. Steven Bouknight and Rev. James A. Goudelock officiating. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12 o'clock in the church sanctuary. Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, is assisting the family.
