Obituary

The funeral service for Hazel Priebe Smyrl, 79, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. Burial will follow at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Hazel died Saturday, March 8, 2014. Born in Pamplico, SC, she was a daughter of the late James and Lizzie Stephens. She was a secretary at the Shakespeare Company where she met her husband and father of her five children, the late Lawrence W. Priebe. She was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Remarkable was her devotion to her family and to Saint Peter's Catholic Church, and as a wife of a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus where she was a dedicated organizer for many charities. She will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

Surviving are her children, Alex Priebe, Theresa Hair, Mark Priebe, Elizabeth Streeter, and Patricia Smerdell; as well as nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and their respective families, all of Columbia, SC and surrounding areas. In addition, she is survived by her brothers, Allen "BoBo" Stephens and Robert Stephens of Pamplico; as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that floral offerings may be arranged through Forget Me Not Flowers at 6830 Two Notch Rd., Columbia.
