Hazel Virginia Surratt Meetze, 90, of Blythewood, died Thursday, October 28, 2015. Hazel, or "Nana" as she was affectionately known, was born on September 25, 1925 in Columbia, SC. She was a daughter of the late William Gaston "W.G." Surratt and Blanche Ella Daniels Surratt. Hazel was employed for over 36 years by Belk. She was a founding member of the North Columbia Church of God, and her faith in God was evidenced by the love and devotion she gave to her family and church. As long as her health allowed, she was very active in worship and service at the Christian Life Assembly of God, and she was known for the gracious hospitality she shared with others, often by preparing and serving wonderful Sunday dinners. Hazel loved gardening, and her rose garden was a delight to her and her family. She will be remembered and cherished for the love she gave so freely to so many, and she was always generous to anyone who had a need.
Hazel is survived by daughters, Irene Meekins (David), Mary Jane Pruitt (Don) and Christine Stevens (Herman); sons, Richard Meetze (Martha), Jerry Meetze (Helen) and Charles Meetze (Charlene); nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd R. Meetze; brothers, Si, Lewis, George and Clyde Surratt; sisters, Alberta Swygert and Lottie Riggs; granddaughter, Shelley Meetze; and great-grandson, Johnathan Noles.
A funeral service for Mrs. Meetze will be held Saturday, October 31st, at 11:30 o'clock, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Exn., Columbia. Burial will follow at St. Mark's Lutheran Church Cemetery, Blythewood. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, beginning at 10:30 o'clock.
