Heide Rosa Engelhardt Golden, 81, of Columbia, died on Saturday, March 11, 2023. Born in Augsburg, Germany, on May 2, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Karl Friedrich Engelhardt and Anna Ida (Heilman) Engelhardt Hull.
Heide Engelhardt Golden was born in Augsburg Germany during World War II along with her elder sister Ursula, younger sister Hanna and baby brother Bernd. They emigrated to America when she was 11 years old to Columbia, where she would live the rest of her life. As a student she excelled in math and science and was the only girl in Chess Club and Math Club. She also ran cross country and was a high jumper for Dentsville High. Heide represented her school at Girls State and was voted Most Intellectual of her Senior class. Due to her dedication and devotion to her adopted country she was also voted Miss D.A.R. her Senior year. Heide attended the University of South Carolina majoring in science. She was working at Alan's dress shop on Main Street when she met Harvey Golden, the love of her life. They married in July of 1962 and raised three children together. Heide later returned to USC to complete her degree in Nursing and then worked at Providence Hospital for over 20 years. Heide's selfless and caring nature made her career choice of nursing a natural fit for her. Heide was also a tireless and dedicated volunteer for her synagogue, Beth Shalom, for over 50 years, serving as Sisterhood president many times.
Survivors include her daughter, Holly Golden Simmel (Keith), of Atlanta, GA; sons, I. Karl Golden (Lauri), of Charlotte, NC and Jared Bernd Golden; grandchildren, Anna Louise Simmel and Harrison Grant Simmel; sister, Hanna Engelhardt Banes (Howard); and nephew, Michael Windham (Amy). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey L. Golden; sister, Ursula Anna Engelhardt; brother, Bernd Oscar Hull; step-father, James Wilbur Hull; and nephew, Brian Engelhardt Banes.
The graveside service for Mrs. Golden will be held at 11 o'clock, Tuesday, March 14th, at Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery, 720 Blanding Street, Columbia, with Rabbi Jonathan Case officiating. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
