Helen Marie Walker Daughtry, 96, of Columbia, died at home surrounded by family on Tuesday, September 7, 2021. Born August 31, 1925, in Columbia, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Richard Desportes Walker, Sr., and Bessie Abrams Walker. She married the love of her life Vernon Oeland Daughtry on March 28, 1948. They were married for 68 years. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the A.B. Ferguson Sunday School Class, and the Magnifiers Choir.
Most important to Helen was her family. She was a stay-at-home mother, PTA president, and known far and wide for her hospitality and graciousness. Everyone in the family loved to go to "Granny's" house, especially her grandchildren who would, on occasion, fake illnesses to stay with Granny and Papa. Being there was like being at a spa. They were served grilled cheese sandwiches while lying on couch and watching cartoons and gameshows, especially the Price is Right. Granny and Papa knew all the Smurfs, Thunder Cats, He-man, Dino-Riders, and My Little Ponies.
Helen loved children of all ages and cared for everyone as if they were a member of her own family. She had pictures of all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews prominently displayed throughout her home. She also kept framed school pictures of her dentist's daughter. She had a picture of her garbage man's daughter from her school and another one from her wedding. It would be impossible to count the magnets from various children that covered her fridge. And she always offered her everyone "a cold coke cola."
Surviving are her daughters, Deborah Leverette (Dennis), Rebecca Daughtry (Charles Haywood); son, Marty Daughtry (Terri); grandchildren, Elizabeth Leverette, Dennis Arthur Leverette, Jr. (Tara), Ben Daughtry (Terra), Ransom Haywood (fiancé, Sally Mills), Kathryn Leno (Steven), and Walker Haywood; great-grandchildren, Landon Daughtry, Arianni Daughtry, and Madilyn Leno; children of her heart Bobbie Paulling, Paula and Dick Paulling, and Betty Jane Savage; numerous loving nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews; along with dear friends Bobbie and Lee Catoe, and Sadie Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.
The family would like to thank Helen's caregivers, especially Sadie Hall and Mary Perry, as well as her grand-niece, Julie Paulling Bjugan for their loving care and support.
