Helen Mustin Fant, 91, died in her home at Still Hopes Retirement Community in West Columbia, SC on Thursday, July 29, 2021 after living a life dedicated to her family, friends, and community. Helen was born on September 18, 1929 in Columbia, SC to the late Willie Harrison Mustin and Thomas Clarence Mustin.
Helen attended Columbia's Shandon Elementary School (later renamed Schneider Elementary School), Hand Junior High, and Dreher High School through the 12th grade. She continued her education at Penn Hall (1947-49), the University of South Carolina (1949-1951) where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and was a member of Kappa Delta. Helen went on to successfully complete the Medical Technology course at the SC School of Medical Technology and became a registered technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
Survivors include her children, Laura of Madbury, NH, Cochran (Karen) of Ocala, FL, and Thomas (Elaine) of Columbia, SC; granddaughters, Amberle, Katherine, Margaret, and Taylor; and great granddaughter, Rowan. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Cochran Fant, Jr.; sister, Willodene "Dene" or "Billie" Mustin.
A family burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery followed by an 11 o'clock, memorial service at Washington Street United Methodist Church on Monday, August 2, 2021. The family will greet friends following the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choosing.
