Helen Elizabeth Smith Parks, 91, of Columbia, passed peacefully into eternal rest in the comfort of her own home, under the care of her closest family members, on Monday, May 2, 2016. Born on September 21, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Henry Elmer Smith, Sr., and Marian Derrick Smith. A faithful member of Eau Claire Baptist Church, Helen was steadfast in her faith, the center of her family, and a beloved "Little Nanny." She was an LPN for many years, caring for others, and was an expert cook, bowler, and crafter. Helen was also known for her baking and for decorating cakes for weddings or for any occasion.
Mrs. Parks is survived by her children, Stuart C. Parks, Sr. (Barbara), Sandra Parks Tanner (Billy), and Susan Parks Frost (Stan), Stanley Parks, Jr., Shirley Patterson, and Sally Watkins; 17 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren; brother, Ronnie E. Smith Sr. (Delores); and sister, Jacqueline Smith Benton (Bill). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Stanley E. Parks, Sr.; son, Stephen J. Parks; grandson, Gregory Stephen Parks; and brothers, William Smith and Henry E. Smith, Jr.
The funeral service for Mrs. Parks will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, May 5, 2016 at Eau Claire Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steven Bouknight and Rev. James A. Goudelock officiating. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive.
