Obituary

Henrietta L. Duncan, 99, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Henrietta was the widow of Joseph Edward "Edd" Duncan, Sr. and the daughter of the late Miles Hoffman Lineberger, Sr and Nellie Harrill Lineberger.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her first child, Patricia Ann Duncan, her sisters Mary Louise Ziv, Betty Crosby, Lucy Elkins, Nell Ferguson, Ethel Griffin and her brother Miles H. Lineberger, Jr. She is survived by her children – Henrietta "Henri" Duncan, Joe Duncan (Nancy) and Barbara Brooks (Dennis). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Karrin and Daniel Duncan and a host of nieces and nephews.

Henrietta left her home in Catawba after high school, coming to Columbia and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. Henrietta had the desire to join the war efforts, but was considered essential at Baptist Hospital, so she was unable to serve in the Armed Forces, but she did some contract work for the Army and was issued a uniform and may have used that uniform to gain access to a bus ride home during war times. She met and married Edd, a serviceman, and they started a family. Henrietta found herself widowed in 1969, but held tight to build the family unit she and Edd started together. She created a safe, loving home and ensured that all of her children received college educations. While raising her family as a single mother, she had a full nursing career, working at Baptist Hospital, with Dr. Pitts, Dr. Payne and retired while working with Dr. Lynn Derrick at Columbia Eye Clinic. She always said the work she did in the operating room was her favorite. She stayed busy in retirement by gardening, woodworking, quilting, sewing, canning fruits and vegetables, and feeding loved ones with her good home cooking.

On November 30, 2021, she fell and broke her hip (first ever broken bone). That came to be a life changing event from which she never fully recovered, but she was able to continue to live at home, being watched over by her daughter Henri, her granddaughter, Karrin and her son. Joe.

A memorial service is planned for August 17 (her birthday) at 2 pm at Catawba United Methodist Church, 4785 College Rd, Catawba, SC 29704. Shives Funeral Home in Columbia SC is handling arrangements. Memorials may be made to Catawba United Methodist Church, Post Office Box 160, Catawba, SC 29704.
