On April 15, 2026, Heaven received the life of the party. Henriette “Henny” Hall—beloved mother, Gramm, mother-in-law, advocate, comedian, friend and nurse—left this earthly existence to enter into glory just the way she wanted-her way on her time.
For many years, Henny battled COPD—or in reality, COPD battled her, and she gave it one heck of a fight. On April 15, at 3PM sharpe she did not succumb to the disease; instead, she put down her armor and called a truce, entering willingly into a beautiful, peaceful agreement. The fight was mutually over.
Born on August 20, 1951 to Dr. Henry Furman Hall, Jr. and Mrs. Ruby Wright Hall. Henny was a graduate of Hammond Academy and the University of South Carolina School of Nursing. Her career was as diverse as her personality; she served as the Captain of the Medical Division at the former Richland County Detention Center (now Alvin S. Glenn) and spent many years managing the Horticultural Building at the S.C. State Fair.
Henny was a woman of many passions. She was a dedicated birder, a lover of needlework, a gardener, and a voracious reader. She also served on the Riverbanks Zoo Commission and never met a "Trash T.V." show she couldn't enjoy. But her greatest joy, by far, was being a mother and "Gramm."
Henny is survived by her daughter, Simeon Hall-Miller Ellis, and her "favorite son-in-law, partner in sarcasm, and jokester ," Thomas (Tommy) Baynard Ellis, V. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren: Xander Ruby Ellis, whom she affectionately called “Butterbean,” and Tristram Thomas Ellis, her “Gingersnap.” She also leaves her former husband but lifelong friend, Harold Tristram Miller, Jr., as well as her cherished dog, Smiley, her cat, Steve, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, George Hall; her husband, Jack Provost; her sisters, Electa Leigh Tyler and Ava Lanier; and her brothers-in-law, Daniel Wesley Tyler and James Marion Lanier.
A time to gather to share memories and honor Henny’s life will be held beginning at 4 o’clock until 6 o’clock on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. Columbia, SC.
In the meantime, please remember Henny by doing a good deed: pay it forward, be kind to birds and animals, be a good friend, or simply make someone laugh.
If you feel inclined, in lieu of flowers, please donate to one of the following organizations close to Henny’s heart:
