Obituary

Dr. Henry W. Asbill, Jr., 76, passed away peacefully at his home on December 24, 2015 following a brief illness. Dr. Asbill was born February 5, 1939 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of the late Henry W. and Eleanor Hart Asbill. He graduated from Dreher High School in 1957 where he was a standout three-sport athlete. He attended Clemson University followed by the Medical College of Virginia where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Graduating in 1964, he was appointed a 1st Lieutenant in the Dental Corps of the United States Navy. He served in Parris Island, South Carolina, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Jacksonville, Florida before his honorable discharge in July 1966. Following completion of his military service, he established a family dentistry practice in Columbia where he practiced for the next 44 years. He was a member of countless study clubs and dental associations, but it was his compassion, skill and impeccable technique that made him a dentist cherished by his many patients.

An avid hunter, fisherman and Clemson fan, Dr. Asbill could often be found on a tractor at Belle Grove, but he was rarely happier than when spending time with friends on a dock with a line in the water, in a dove field or in a deer stand. The only thing he enjoyed more was spending time with his wife, sons and their families.

Dr. Asbill is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of over fifty years, Frances Shelley "Scottie" Asbill; his sister Nancy Asbill Falls and her husband, Ronald Falls; his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Brian H. Asbill and Dr. Sarah Warren Asbill, Dr. Kevin S. Asbill and Jennifer Breihan Asbill; five grandchildren, Connor, Ryan, Henry, Jacob and Lauren Asbill and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 27th from 4-6pm at the home at 841 Abelia Road. A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock, Monday, December 28th at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia with a reception to follow in Satterlee Hall. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery will be private. Memorials may be made to The Dewees Island Conservancy, Congaree Land Trust, or a charity of one's choice. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting with arrangements.
