Henry M. "Hank" Maine, 90, Columbia, died Friday, May 11, 2018. Born March 18, 1928, in Willimantic, Connecticut, he was a son of the late Harold Maine and Florence Card Maine.
After completing high school in 1946, Henry entered the Marine Corps and underwent training at Parris Island, SC. He served in the Marines two years before receiving an honorable discharge in 1948. He continued his education at Northeastern College in Boston, but in 1950, returned to military life, joining the U.S. Air Force. He completed Radar Observer School in Waco, Texas in 1952 with the rank of Second Lieutenant and was sent to Japan where he served until 1955. After returning to the United States, his duty stations spanned the country including New Castle, Delaware, Navigator school in California, and serving as advisor to Air National Guard in Great Falls, Montana. White in Great Falls, he received a degree in Accounting and also joined the Shriners, Sojourners and Masons, reaching the coveted thirty second degree. He later transferred to Fairchild AFB in Washington as Navigator of a KC-135 for the Strategic Air Command.
After his marriage in 1965 to Marie Boles, Hank was assigned to the Air Force R.O.T.C. program the University of South Carolina, and he and his bride began their new life in Columbia. He served with distinction at USC, rising to the position of Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies. He served in Vietnam from 1969 until 1970, at which time he became Commandant of the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1972, after leaving military service, he returned to USC to complete his Masters Degree in Accounting. He was employed at Midlands Technical College in Columbia until his retirement in 1990. While at Midlands Tech, he was recognized at an "Outstanding Faculty Member".
Henry was an active member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, where he served as Deacon, Head Usher at worship services, and assisted with the church's Soup Kitchen.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice Marie Boles Maine; a niece, Virginia MacVicars; and his harem. In addition to his parents, Mr. Maine was predeceased by a brother, William Maine.
The service for Mr. Maine will be held 11 o'clock, Saturday, May 19th, at Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, 6500 N. Trenholm Road, Columbia, with The Rev. Dr. Ellen Fowler Skidmore officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
