Obituary

Herbert J. "Hub" Derrick, Sr., 90, of Little Mountain, surrounded by family and friends, entered into the presence of his Lord, Sunday, March 3, 2013. Born in Columbia on September 28, 1922, he was a son of the late Ernest Dewey and Minnie Ross Derrick. Hub graduated from Columbia High School, Class of 1940 and went on to attend the University of South Carolina. He served in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict, serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. In 1958 he founded Derrick Insulation Company, where he remained active until his retirement at the age of 88. Hub was a former Lion's Club member and was active at Eau Claire Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school secretary. He was known by many as the "Candy Man".

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Frances Gatlin Derrick; sons, H. Joseph "Joe" Derrick, Jr. (Sharon), W. Randolph "Randy" Derrick (Annette), all of Little Mountain, and E. Forrest Derrick (Rhonda) of Chapin; daughter, Leigh Ann Derrick Brown (Michael) of Chapin; grandchildren, Kevin Garner, Kathy Prijoles (Ernie), Kristi Atkinson, Stephanie Derrick Bradley (Bruce), Jonathan Derrick, Benjamin Derrick, Rebekah Carter (Mark), Adam Ross Derrick, Clark Brown and Melissa Brown; great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Alexis, and April Prijoles, Kayla and Mike Rabon, Samantha Sevarance (R.C.), Tristen, Isaac and Cole Queen, Logan and Carson Derrick; one great great granddaughter, Annabelle Sevarance; and sister, Annie Laurie Bouknight of Columbia. In addition to his parents, Hub was preceded in death by his brothers, E.D. Derrick, Jr. and Gary Ross Derrick.

The funeral service for Mr. Derrick will be held 11 o'clock, Wednesday, March 6th, at Eau Claire Baptist Church, 4427 N Main St, Columbia, with The Rev. James A. Goudelock officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Adam Ross Derrick, Benjamin Derrick, Jonathan Derrick, David Gatlin, Kevin Garner, and Ernie Prijoles. Deacons of Eau Claire Baptist Church are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 10 o'clock.
