Herbert Gustave Henrikson, of Columbia, died Monday, November 11, 2013. He was born to the late John and Naima Henrikson in Brooklyn, NY on March 24, 1916.
Mr. Henrikson was proud of his Swedish-American heritage as well as his service in the US Army, making his passing on Veteran's day 2013 a fitting tribute. As a 1st LT. in the 86th Chemical Mortar Battalion during WWII, he served in the Battle of the Bulge and was part of the D-Day Campaign in Normandy. He ended his military service as a Captain. Mr. Henrikson was the owner of of Henrikson Greenhouses, Inc. He was a member of Earlewood Masonic Lodge and Jamil Shrine Temple.
Survivors include his daughters, Norma H. (Ray) Cannon, Carla H. Ewing; grandchildren, Melanie (Shane) Whitfield, Todd (Candace) Cannon, and Elise Ewing; nephew, John Henrikson; and niece Lynn H. Devine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Raiford L. "Betty Rae" Henrikson; brother, Runar Henrikson; son-in-law, Michael Ewing.
The funeral service for Mr. Henrikson will be held at 10 o'clock, Thursday, November 14th at St. Mark United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Bob Borom officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock Wednesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
