Herman Lloyd McQuage, 81, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Born in McBee, South Carolina, on November 5, 1941, he was a son of the late Paul Jerome McQuage and Ella Ruth Sowell McQuage. Herman was a devout member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the loving husband of 56 years to Evelyn Perdue McQuage.
Herman graduated from McBee High School, where he played football and basketball. After graduation, he moved to Columbia and earned his degree from Columbia Junior College, which is when he met many life-long friends and his adoring wife. Herman dedicated 30 years working for the South Carolina Budget and Control Board as director of financial systems. He was a member of the Jamil Shriners and in 1995, Herman was awarded The Order of the Palmetto. He was a proud veteran and selflessly served four years in the United States Navy.
Herman was loyal and dedicated to his family, his friends, and his church. He had a positive outlook on life and never failed to see the good in others. Herman is fondly remembered as a man of high integrity. His greatest joy in life was being a father to his girls and "Big Daddy" to his grandchildren. Herman was an avid fan of Gamecock sports; he enjoyed being a football referee and playing golf. Herman had a love for the outdoors, camping, and fishing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Kelli Tyner (Del) and Allison McCutcheon (Fred), grandchildren, Matthew Tyner, Daniel Tyner, Luke Tyner, William McCutcheon, and Rachel McCutcheon. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Howard McQuage (Doris).
The funeral service for Mr. McQuage will be held at 10:30 o'clock on Wednesday, November 1st, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive Columbia, SC, with the Rev. Andrew W. Isenhower to officiate. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30 o'clock at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
